Trusting God When You Do Not Understand

Scripture
“Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?” Romans 9:20 (KJV)

Devotion

There are moments in life when God’s ways feel difficult to understand. Situations arise that challenge our expectations, and we may find ourselves wondering why things unfold the way they do. It is natural to want clear explanations for everything we experience. Yet Romans 9 reminds us that our perspective is limited compared to God’s wisdom. Just as a creation cannot fully question the intentions of its creator, we cannot always grasp the full scope of God’s plans. Trusting God does not mean pretending every situation makes sense. It means believing that His understanding is greater than ours and that His purposes extend beyond what we can currently see. When we release the need to control every answer, we create space for trust to grow.

Reflection

Are there situations in your life where you struggle to understand why things happened the way they did?

Extended Insight

Faith often develops in the tension between what we know and what we do not understand. Human reasoning seeks clear explanations, but God’s plans sometimes unfold in ways that stretch beyond our immediate logic. Throughout Scripture, many faithful individuals walked through seasons where they could not see the full purpose of their circumstances. Over time, those experiences often revealed deeper growth, preparation, or redirection. Trusting God means recognizing that His wisdom reaches far beyond our present moment. Even when answers remain unclear, His character remains steady and trustworthy.

Prayer

Father, help me trust You even when I do not understand the circumstances around me. When questions arise in my heart, remind me that Your wisdom is greater than my perspective. Teach me to release the need to control every answer and to rest in the confidence that You are guiding my life with purpose and care. Strengthen my faith so that I can walk forward trusting Your plans even when the path feels uncertain. Amen.
