Watching With Expectation
Scripture
“And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” Mark 13:37 KJV
Devotion
Jesus gave a simple instruction to His followers.
Watch.
He did not say this only to a small group of disciples standing near Him that day. The words of Jesus were meant for everyone who would follow Him in every generation. His message was clear.
Live watchfully.
Watching does not mean living in fear or constantly trying to calculate when Christ will return. Instead, it means living with expectation. It means remembering that history is moving toward a moment when Jesus will return and complete what He began.
For the believer, that moment is not something to dread.
It is something to look forward to.
Watching with expectation changes the way a person lives. The heart becomes more attentive to God. Faith becomes more intentional. The choices we make begin to reflect the life we want to be living when we finally stand before Christ.
Expectation keeps the heart awake.
A person who expects the return of Christ does not treat faith as something casual or occasional. Faith becomes a daily walk with God, a life shaped by the hope that one day the King will return.
The call to watch is really a call to stay close.
Reflection
Do you think about the return of Christ with fear or with expectation?
How might your daily life look different if you truly believed He could return at any time?
Extended Insight
In Mark 13, Jesus spoke about the coming events that would unfold before His return. While many details about timing remained unknown, His final instruction was simple.
Watch.
The command to watch appears several times in the New Testament. It reflects a posture of spiritual alertness and hopeful expectation. Rather than becoming distracted by the temporary concerns of life, believers are encouraged to remain attentive to God’s purposes.
Watching with expectation means living faithfully, loving others, and remaining close to Christ while waiting for His return.
It is the life of someone who knows the story is not finished yet.
Prayer
Father, help my heart live with expectation for the return of Christ.
Teach me to stay spiritually awake and attentive to You. Help me live faithfully each day as I wait for the moment when Christ returns.
May my life reflect the hope of Your coming kingdom.
Amen.
