What If God Is Actually Closer Than You Think
Scripture
“Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off?”Jeremiah 23:23 KJV
Devotion
There are moments when God feels distant. Life becomes busy, the mind becomes heavy with concerns, and prayer can begin to feel like words spoken into empty space. In those seasons the heart quietly assumes that God must be far away.
But what if that assumption is wrong?
What if God is actually closer than you think?
Through the prophet Jeremiah, God asked a question that challenged how people viewed His presence. “Am I a God at hand… and not a God afar off?” God was reminding His people that He was not distant or detached from their lives.
The presence of God is not measured by how strongly we feel Him in a moment. His nearness is rooted in His character and His promise.
Sometimes the reason God feels far away is not because He has moved but because our attention has drifted. When the heart becomes quiet again and turns toward Him, we often discover that He was near all along.
God is not watching your life from a distance. He is present in it.
Reflection
Have there been times when God felt distant from your life?
What might change if you believed that His presence has been near even in the moments you did not feel it?
Extended Insight
Scripture repeatedly affirms the nearness of God to His people. While God is sovereign over all creation, He is also personally involved in the lives of those who seek Him.
This tension between God’s greatness and His closeness appears throughout the Bible. The Creator of the universe is also the One who draws near to individuals, listens to their prayers, and walks with them through life.
The nearness of God becomes most clearly visible through Christ. In Jesus, God entered human history and lived among people. This reveals the heart of God toward humanity.
He is not distant. He is near.
Prayer
Father, there are times when I feel as though You are far away from my situation. My circumstances and emotions sometimes make it difficult to recognize Your presence.
Thank You for the reminder that You are not a distant God. You are near to those who seek You.
Help me quiet my heart and become aware of Your presence in my life. Teach me to trust that You are walking with me even in moments when I do not feel it clearly.
Thank You for being closer than I often realize.
Amen.
