What Is Controlling Your Heart Right Now
Scripture
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”Proverbs 4:23 KJV
Devotion
The heart is the quiet center of a person’s life. It is where desires are formed, where decisions begin, and where beliefs about God and ourselves take root. Because the heart shapes the direction of life, Scripture repeatedly calls us to pay close attention to what is happening within it.
The question is not whether something is influencing your heart.
The question is what is influencing it.
Fear can take hold of the heart and begin shaping every decision. Offense can quietly settle in and color the way we see people. Worry can slowly occupy the space that trust once held. Over time, whatever fills the heart begins to guide the course of life.
This is why Proverbs gives such a strong instruction. Guard your heart with diligence.
Guarding the heart does not mean hiding from life or ignoring emotions. It means being honest about what is shaping your inner life and bringing those influences before God. When the heart returns to the truth of God’s Word, it becomes aligned again with the life He intends.
The condition of the heart determines the direction of the life.
Reflection
What thoughts or emotions have been shaping your heart recently?
Are those influences leading you toward trust in God or pulling your attention away from Him?
Extended Insight
In biblical language, the heart represents the center of the inner life. It includes thoughts, desires, intentions, and affections. Because the heart influences everything else, Scripture treats it as the place where spiritual formation begins.
Jesus later echoed this truth when He taught that the things which come out of a person’s life flow from the heart.
This means the battle for spiritual growth is often a battle for the heart. Whatever controls the heart eventually shapes actions, attitudes, and decisions.
Guarding the heart involves bringing it continually back under the influence of God’s truth. As the heart becomes aligned with God, the direction of life begins to reflect His wisdom.
Prayer
Father, You see the true condition of my heart even when I struggle to understand it myself. You know the thoughts, desires, and emotions that are shaping my life right now.
Help me guard my heart with diligence. Show me anything that has taken control of my thoughts in a way that pulls me away from Your truth.
Teach me to place my heart under Your guidance each day. Let Your Word shape my desires and lead my life in the direction You have prepared.
I give my heart to You again today.
Amen.
