What Is God Really Asking of You

Scripture
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”Micah 6:8 KJV

Devotion

Sometimes people assume that following God must be complicated. They imagine that God is asking for something grand, something difficult to understand, or something far beyond their reach. In those moments the life of faith can begin to feel overwhelming.

But Scripture often brings the question back to something much simpler.

What is God really asking of you?

Through the prophet Micah, God spoke directly to this question. The people had filled their lives with religious activity, sacrifices, and outward expressions of devotion. Yet God reminded them that what He truly desired was not performance but a transformed heart.

To do justly.

To love mercy.

To walk humbly with God.

These words reveal the kind of life God values. Justice reflects a heart that chooses what is right. Mercy reflects a heart that understands grace. Humility reflects a life that depends on God rather than personal strength.

God is not asking you to carry the weight of perfection. He is inviting you to walk with Him.

Reflection

When you think about what God may be asking of you, what thoughts or expectations come to mind?

How might your life change if you focused on walking humbly with God one step at a time?

Extended Insight

Micah 6 takes place during a time when the people of Israel had begun to substitute religious activity for genuine obedience. They wondered what kind of offerings would please God, even asking whether extravagant sacrifices would be required.

God’s response was strikingly simple.

He reminded them that His desire was not merely ritual but relationship expressed through daily life. Justice, mercy, and humility reflect the character of God lived out through His people.

This passage continues to guide believers today. The life of faith is not primarily about complicated systems or outward display. It is about living in alignment with the heart of God.

Prayer

Father, there are times when I overcomplicate what it means to follow You. I sometimes imagine that You are asking for things I cannot fully understand or achieve.

Thank You for showing what is good. Help me live with justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with You each day.

Teach me to follow You in the ordinary moments of life, trusting that faithful steps matter to You.

Let my life reflect the heart You desire.

Amen.
