When Life Feels Like Too Much to Handle
Scripture
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” Psalms 46:1–2 KJV
Devotion
There are seasons in life when everything seems to pile up at once.
Responsibilities increase. Problems multiply. Unexpected situations appear that you never planned for. What once felt manageable suddenly feels overwhelming, and your heart quietly asks the question many people ask in difficult moments.
How am I supposed to carry all of this?
When life feels like too much to handle, the temptation is to believe that you must somehow find the strength within yourself to keep everything together. The pressure to manage every situation, fix every problem, and hold everything in place can become exhausting.
But Scripture reminds us of something important.
God never asked you to carry life alone.
Psalms 46 describes God as “a very present help in trouble.” That means He is not distant from your situation. He is present within it. Even when life feels unstable and circumstances seem overwhelming, God remains the refuge where your heart can find stability again.
Your strength may feel limited.
God’s strength is not.
When life becomes too heavy, the answer is not trying harder. The answer is remembering where your help comes from. God is not standing far away waiting for you to figure everything out. He is the refuge you can run to when life feels like more than you can handle.
Reflection
What situation in your life currently feels overwhelming?
How might turning toward God as your refuge change the way you face that situation today?
Extended Insight
Psalm 46 was written during times of national uncertainty and crisis. The imagery of mountains falling into the sea represents situations that feel catastrophic and completely beyond human control.
Yet in the middle of that imagery, the psalm declares that God remains a refuge and a source of strength. His presence provides stability even when everything around us feels unstable.
The phrase “very present help” emphasizes that God is not merely aware of our struggles. He actively supports and strengthens those who turn to Him.
God’s presence becomes the place where overwhelmed hearts find strength again.
Prayer
Father, when life feels overwhelming, remind me that I do not have to carry everything alone.
You are my refuge and my strength. Help me bring every burden and every worry to You. Strengthen my heart and give me peace in the middle of the situations I cannot control.
Teach me to rest in Your presence when life feels too heavy.
Amen.
