You Are Allowed to Start Again
Scripture
“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”Lamentations 3:22–23 KJV
Devotion
There are moments in life when the weight of yesterday feels heavy. Mistakes linger in the mind. Regrets replay themselves in quiet moments. The heart begins to believe that the past has permanently shaped the future.
But God does not relate to His people according to yesterday’s failures.
Scripture reminds us that the mercies of the Lord are new every morning.
This means every new day carries the possibility of beginning again. God’s compassion does not run out after a difficult season. His faithfulness does not fade because a person struggled or fell short.
Each morning arrives with fresh mercy.
This truth changes how we approach both God and ourselves. Instead of living under the shadow of past mistakes, we are invited to step into the grace that God provides today.
God is not asking you to carry yesterday forever. Through His mercy, He gives you permission to begin again.
Reflection
Are there moments from your past that still feel like they define you?
What might change if you allowed yourself to receive the fresh mercy God offers today?
Extended Insight
The words in Lamentations were written during one of the darkest periods in Israel’s history. Jerusalem had been destroyed, and the people were surrounded by grief and loss. Yet in the middle of this sorrow, the writer speaks about the faithfulness of God.
Even in devastation, God’s mercy remained.
This reveals an important truth about God’s character. His compassion does not depend on circumstances. His faithfulness does not fluctuate with human success or failure.
The phrase “new every morning” emphasizes the constant renewal of God’s mercy. Each day becomes an opportunity to walk forward under His grace.
The past may shape our story, but it does not have the authority to define our future when God’s mercy is present.
Prayer
Father, there are times when my past feels heavy and difficult to release. My mind often returns to mistakes and moments I wish I could change.
Thank You for the promise that Your mercies are new every morning. Your compassion does not run out, and Your faithfulness never fails.
Help me receive the grace You offer today. Teach my heart to walk forward instead of remaining trapped in yesterday.
Let Your mercy give me the courage to begin again.
Amen.
