You Are Not What Social Media Says

Scripture
“But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 KJV

Devotion

The world constantly tries to define people.

Social media measures worth by appearance, popularity, attention, and approval. It suggests that value is determined by how many people notice you, how successful you appear, or how well your life compares to someone else’s.

Over time these messages can quietly shape how a person sees themselves.

You may begin to feel like you are not enough. Not successful enough. Not attractive enough. Not interesting enough. Comparison becomes exhausting, and identity slowly becomes tied to opinions that change from one moment to the next.

But God never measures a person that way.

When Samuel went to anoint the next king of Israel, he expected someone impressive on the outside. Yet God corrected him immediately. The Lord explained that people look at outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.

This means your value is not determined by the image you present to the world.

It is determined by the One who created you.

God sees the parts of your life that no platform can display. He sees the thoughts, the intentions, the quiet acts of faith, and the sincerity of your heart. These are the things that matter most to Him.

The voices of the world may try to define you by appearance, success, or approval.

But God defines you by something far deeper.

Reflection

Have you ever compared your life to what you see online and felt like you did not measure up?

How might your identity change if you remembered that God looks at the heart rather than outward appearance?

Extended Insight

1 Samuel 16 records the moment when God chose David to become king. At the time, David did not appear to be the obvious choice. He was the youngest in his family and was not even present when Samuel first arrived.

Yet God saw something others could not see.

This moment reveals an important truth about how God views people. Human systems often evaluate individuals based on visible achievements or external appearance. God evaluates the condition of the heart.

This perspective frees believers from the pressure of comparison. Identity is not determined by public approval but by the relationship each person has with God.

Prayer

Father, help me guard my heart against the voices that try to define my worth.

When comparison begins to shape how I see myself, remind me that my identity comes from You. Teach me to care more about the condition of my heart than about outward appearance or approval.

Help me walk in confidence knowing that You see me fully and value what truly matters.

Amen.
