You Can Stop Hiding Now
Scripture
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. And Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? Genesis 3:8–9 KJV
Devotion
From the very beginning of the human story, the instinct to hide has lived inside the heart of mankind. When Adam and Eve sinned, their first response was not confession. It was concealment. They heard the voice of God, and instead of running toward Him, they withdrew into the trees.
This moment reveals something about the human condition that still exists today. When people feel exposed, ashamed, or afraid, the natural response is to hide. Some hide behind silence. Some hide behind busyness. Others hide behind the appearance that everything is fine.
Yet what is most striking about this passage is not that Adam hid. It is that God came looking for him.
Scripture tells us that the Lord walked into the garden and called out, “Where art thou?” God already knew Adam’s location. The question was not about information. It was about invitation.
God was calling Adam out of hiding and back into relationship.
This is still the heart of God today. When we feel ashamed or distant, we often assume that we must clean ourselves up before we return to Him. But the truth is that God is the one who initiates the call. His voice still moves through the garden of the human heart asking the same question.
Where are you?
Not to accuse. Not to shame. But to draw us back into the open where grace can begin to restore what fear tried to hide.
Reflection
Is there an area of your life where you have been quietly withdrawing from God?
What would it look like today to step out of that place of hiding and answer His call?
Extended Insight
The question God asked Adam is the first recorded question spoken by God to humanity after the fall. It reveals the posture of His heart toward those who have sinned.
God did not begin with condemnation. He began with pursuit.
Throughout Scripture this same pattern appears again and again. God continually moves toward humanity even when humanity moves away from Him. The prophets, the covenants, and ultimately the coming of Christ all reveal the same truth. God seeks what has been lost.
The instinct of shame is always to withdraw. Shame whispers that distance is safer than honesty. But the presence of God is not a place of destruction for those who come humbly before Him. It is the place where restoration begins.
The question “Where art thou?” still echoes through the lives of believers today. It is the gentle call of a Father who desires relationship more than distance.
Prayer
Father, I confess that there are times when I withdraw from You because I feel ashamed, uncertain, or afraid. Instead of drawing near, I sometimes try to hide parts of my heart.
But today I hear Your voice calling me back into the open. You are not asking where I am because You do not know. You are inviting me back into relationship with You.
Help me lay aside the fear that causes me to hide. Give me the courage to come before You honestly, knowing that Your heart is full of mercy and truth.
Thank You for being the God who seeks me even when I feel lost. I choose today to step out of hiding and walk with You again.
Amen.
