The Person God Is Building While You Wait

Waiting is one of the most difficult seasons we experience as believers.

We pray.

We trust.

We obey.

Then we wait.

Sometimes we wait for an answer to prayer.

Sometimes we wait for healing.

Sometimes we wait for an opportunity.

Sometimes we wait for a door to open that seems determined to remain closed.

If we’re honest, waiting can feel unproductive. We often measure progress by what we can see. We look for visible results, tangible evidence that something is changing.

Yet God’s perspective is often very different from ours.

We measure progress by what changes around us.

God often measures progress by what changes within us.

When we read Scripture, we see this pattern repeatedly.

Joseph waited for years before stepping into the position God had prepared for him. During those years, God was developing integrity, humility, and perseverance.

Moses spent forty years in the wilderness before leading Israel out of Egypt. Those quiet years were not wasted. They were preparation.

David was anointed as king long before he ever sat on the throne. In the waiting, God was shaping the heart of a shepherd into the heart of a king.

Even Jesus spent years in relative obscurity before beginning His public ministry.

Waiting has never meant that God is inactive.

Quite the opposite.

Waiting is often where God does His deepest work.

The challenge is that we naturally focus on what we are waiting for.

God focuses on who we are becoming while we wait.

Perhaps you have been praying for a new opportunity.

God may be developing patience.

Perhaps you have been asking for a ministry.

God may be cultivating humility.

Perhaps you are waiting for a breakthrough.

God may be strengthening your faith.

The answer we are praying for matters.

But the person we are becoming matters even more.

There have been seasons in my own life when I questioned whether anything was changing. I looked around and saw delays where I expected progress. I measured success by visible results and wondered why things weren’t moving more quickly.

Looking back, I can now see that God was moving.

Just not in the way I expected.

While I was watching for changes in my circumstances, He was changing my heart.

He was teaching me to trust Him without immediate results.

He was teaching me that obedience and outcomes are not the same thing.

He was teaching me that my relationship with Him is not built only during seasons of abundance, but also during seasons of waiting.

Perhaps that is where you find yourself today.

You have been faithful.

You have continued praying.

You have continued obeying.

Yet the answer still seems distant.

Take heart.

Waiting does not mean God has forgotten you.

It does not mean your prayers have gone unheard.

It does not mean nothing is happening.

It may simply mean that while you are waiting for God to build something around you, He is faithfully building something within you.

One day you may look back and realize that the greatest miracle was not the answered prayer.

It was the person God shaped while you waited for it.

So if you find yourself in a season of waiting today, don’t ask only, “When will this change?”

Ask another question as well.

“Lord, who are You shaping me to become while I wait?”

Because sometimes the most important work God is doing cannot yet be seen.

It can only be experienced.

And when the waiting season is over, you may discover that the greatest gift was not simply what God gave you.

It was who He helped you become.
