What If Eden Was Never Just a Garden?

When most people think of Eden, they picture a beautiful garden filled with abundance, peace, and the presence of God. We often view Eden as a place that was lost long ago, something that existed only in the opening chapters of Genesis.

But what if Eden was never merely a location?

What if Eden represented something deeper?

As I spent time studying the life of Job, I began to see a connection that I had never noticed before. Before the serpent entered the garden, Adam and Eve walked with God in trust, fellowship, and righteousness. Their relationship with Him was unbroken. There was no accusation, no shame, and no striving.

Then came the test.

The serpent did not begin by attacking Adam and Eve directly. He attacked their trust in God. His goal was to create doubt where confidence once existed.

The same pattern appears in the book of Job.

Job is introduced as a righteous man. He walks with God. He fears the Lord. His life reflects a heart that is rooted in faithfulness. Yet when testing comes, the question is not whether Job will suffer. The question is whether he will remain steadfast in his relationship with God.

This is one of the themes that inspired my book, Back to Eden: Lessons from Job for Life in the Garden Again.

The more I studied Job, the more I realized that the story is about far more than loss and restoration. It is about what happens when faith is tested. It is about what remains when explanations fail. It is about whether a person can continue to trust God when life no longer makes sense.

Perhaps Eden is not simply a garden.

Perhaps Eden is a posture.

A posture of trust.

A posture of righteousness.

A posture that God preserves in His people until the testing comes.

And when the testing comes, it does not create what is within us. It reveals what has already taken root.

That is why Job’s story continues to speak to us today.

We are not merely reading about Job.

We are examining our own walk with God.
