When Expectations Become Heavier Than Your Calling

There is a subtle burden many of us carry that we rarely talk about.

It is not the work.

It is not the calling.

It is not even the obedience.

It is the weight of our expectations.

When we begin a new journey with God, we naturally imagine what it might become. We picture the doors that will open, the lives that will be changed, the opportunities that may come, and the prayers that will finally be answered.

There is nothing wrong with hope.

Hope is a gift from God.

The challenge comes when our expectations quietly become heavier than the calling itself.

Suddenly, we are no longer serving because we love God.

We are serving because we are waiting for a particular outcome.

If that outcome comes quickly, our faith feels encouraged.

If it doesn’t, discouragement quietly settles into our hearts.

The work has not changed.

The calling has not changed.

Only our expectations have.

I have found myself reflecting on this very lesson.

There have been seasons when I genuinely loved the work God placed before me. I loved studying His Word. I loved writing. I loved creating resources that could encourage someone in their walk with Christ.

None of that changed.

What became difficult was measuring the work against the outcome I expected.

I imagined different timelines.

Different opportunities.

Different results.

When those things didn’t happen as quickly as I had hoped, disappointment began whispering questions that God had never asked.

“Did I hear Him correctly?”

“Was this worth it?”

“Should I stop?”

Yet as I prayed, I sensed the Lord gently reminding me of something I had overlooked.

He never asked me to carry the outcome.

He only asked me to carry the assignment.

There is tremendous freedom in that truth.

God is responsible for the harvest.

We are responsible for the faithfulness.

No farmer plants a seed in the morning and expects a harvest by evening.

The hidden work beneath the soil is just as important as the fruit that eventually appears above it.

The same is true in our spiritual lives.

Sometimes God allows us to remain in seasons where the visible results are few because He is teaching us to find joy in obedience rather than accomplishment.

That is not an easy lesson.

But it is a freeing one.

When our identity becomes attached to outcomes, every delay feels like failure.

Every closed door feels like rejection.

Every unanswered prayer feels like defeat.

But when our identity is rooted in Christ, we begin to understand that success is not measured by immediate results.

Success is measured by faithful obedience.

Perhaps today you find yourself discouraged.

Not because you no longer love what God has called you to do.

But because the outcome has looked different than you imagined.

If that is you, I want to encourage you with this thought.

Do not confuse delayed fruit with a failed calling.

The seeds you have planted may still be growing beneath the surface.

The prayers you have prayed have not been forgotten.

The work you have done has not been wasted.

God sees every act of obedience, even the ones no one else notices.

So instead of asking,

“Why isn’t this happening the way I expected?”

Perhaps ask a different question.

“Lord, how can I remain faithful with what You have placed in my hands today?”

Because one day you may discover that the greatest thing God produced was not the outcome you had imagined.

It was the faith He cultivated while you continued to obey.

Sometimes the work isn’t what discourages us.

The gap between what we expected and what happened does.

But God’s calling has never depended on our expectations.

It has always depended on His faithfulness.

Much Love
