Who Told You It Was Your Job to Hold Everything Together?

There is a quiet burden many of us carry without ever realizing it.

It doesn’t usually sound spiritual. In fact, it often disguises itself as responsibility.

“If I don’t keep pushing, everything will fall apart.”

“It’s all up to me.”

“I have to make this work.”

“I have to figure this out.”

The weight of those thoughts can become exhausting.

Without realizing it, we slowly begin living as though we are responsible for sustaining the very life God promised to sustain Himself.

Somewhere along the way, we quietly step into a role that was never ours to carry.

We become the provider.

The protector.

The planner.

The one holding everything together.

Yet Scripture paints a very different picture.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus asked His listeners to look around them.

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.”(Matthew 6:26)

Then He pointed to the flowers.

“See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” (Matthew 6:28–29)

Notice what Jesus wasn’t teaching.

He wasn’t encouraging laziness.

Birds still gather food.

Flowers still grow.

There is movement.

There is participation.

But there is no striving to become their own source.

The birds never wake up wondering if they must somehow sustain creation.

The flowers never anxiously compete with one another to earn their beauty.

They simply live within the care of the One who created them.

How different our lives often become.

We work hard.

We plan wisely.

We steward what God has entrusted to us.

Those are all good and necessary things.

But stewardship is not the same as self-sustaining.

Stewardship says, “Lord, I will faithfully care for what You’ve placed in my hands.”

Self-sustaining says, “Lord, everything depends on me.”

One is faith.

The other is fear.

Perhaps this is why Jesus followed His teaching about the birds and the flowers by saying,

“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)

Jesus was shifting their focus.

The goal was never to spend life anxiously trying to hold everything together.

The goal was to remain close to the One who already holds everything together.

I wonder how much of our exhaustion comes from carrying responsibilities God never asked us to carry.

We cannot sustain tomorrow.

We cannot guarantee outcomes.

We cannot control every circumstance.

We cannot keep every person safe.

We cannot manufacture peace.

Those things have always belonged to God.

Our responsibility is much simpler.

Trust Him.

Walk with Him.

Obey Him.

Leave the sustaining to Him.

That doesn’t remove our responsibility.

It removes the crushing weight of believing we are the source.

The apostle Paul reminds us that in Christ, “all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17)

Not in us.

Not in our plans.

Not in our efforts.

In Him.

Perhaps today the Lord is gently asking you to lay down burdens you were never meant to carry.

Maybe the life you’re trying so hard to hold together is already being held together by the faithful hands of your Father.

You don’t have to sustain yourself.

He already is.

Reflection

Take a moment and ask yourself:

Where have I quietly taken responsibility for something that belongs to God?

Perhaps faith today looks less like striving… and more like surrender.

“Faithfulness is my responsibility. Sustaining my life has always belonged to God.”
